About the poet:

Born: December 24, 1822 in Middlesex, England.
Died: April 15, 1888  in Liverpool, England.

In the 1850's Arnold was a government school inspector.  This allowed him to travel all over England and developed his interest in education.  He wrote poetry during this time and was then asked to become the Professor of Poetry at Oxford.  He was the first to lecture in English rather than Latin.
